product info & care instructions

What are my item's cleaning instructions?

Crate covers, car seat covers, couch covers & pillow packs:

  1. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent
  2. Remove items from washer immediately
  3. Hang the item or lay flat to dry

Avoid shrinking
Don’t leave items to sit in the washer (or soak) for an extended period of time. This can cause cotton—even preshrunk—to shrink.

Avoid fading/discoloration
Please read our list of detergent ingredients to avoid, as they can cause premature fading and discoloring.

Dog bed covers, crate pad covers, pet blankets, stuff sacks:

  1. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent
  2. Don’t let items soak for a long period after the wash
  3. Tumble dry on the low or warm heat setting

Armor liners:

  1. Wipe with a damp cloth & gentle soap
  2. If further cleaning is needed, wash in cold water
  3. Hang the item to dry

How do I clean my wool insert?
  1. Spot clean by hand with a mild detergent or woolite
  2. Lather for about 20 seconds, then rinse the area with clean water
  3. Gently squeeze out excess water and lay in the sun to dry

Refresh your wool
Lay the wool-filled encasement in the sun for 2-3 hours every month or so to freshen and cleanse the wool fibers.

No washer or dryer!
The agitation during the wash, and the heat from the dryer, will ruin the structure of the wool fibers and its natural lanolin.

How do I re-fluff my wool insert?

Over time the wool inside the insert can compress and possibly shift around. To re-fluff the insert, follow these simple instructions:

  1. Remove the cover from the insert
  2. Grab the wool — through the top & bottom of the encasement — and pull it apart
  3. Repeat this over the entire insert until fully re-fluffed

If your insert still feels a bit flat, contact us about some extra wool.

How do I avoid fading or discoloring?

Please avoid using detergents with the following, as these ingredients can cause premature fading:

Bleach or bleach additives and optical brighteners, which are showing up in more and more detergents these days. There is some debate about the environmental and health effects of optical brighteners, but they can cause colors to fade or discolor. Look for any of these names on your detergent bottle:

  • optical brightening agents (obas)
  • optical whiteners
  • fluorescent brightening agents
  • fluorescent brighteners
  • fluorescent optical brighteners
  • fluorescent whitening agents (fwas)
  • fluorescent white dyes
  • organic fluorescent dyes
Are molly mutt products chew-proof?

It's a dog eat bed world out there!

molly mutt customers have sharp teeth & claws — no, not you!

We know our products have to be durable. So, we specify the density of the weave in our material so that it's woven tightly to guard against snags and tearing.

But we also know there's no such thing as "chewproof" when a determined dog is involved!

So we've designed a repair program to fix all sorts of tears, rips, and other damage.

Are molly mutt products waterproof?

No, but we do offer water-resistant liners for both our dog beds and crate pads.

Our liners are designed to fit inside over the mattress and under the cover — protecting the insides from the elements.

Where are your products made?

The quick answer is the United States, China, and India.

The longer, more nuanced, answer starts back in 2008 when molly mutt was founded. Upon launching our business we were disappointed to learn that it is impossible to manufacture high quality 100% cotton canvas textiles, in our own designs, anywhere in the United States. That is simply the reality of the textile printing industry — it has all moved overseas.

We buy and make all we can here in the Unites States, including: our 100% wool-filled inserts, crate bumpers, "fresh" dog bed deodorizer, and our collars and leads. We do all of the hand-filling and finishing of our wool inserts, as well as the custom sewing projects and all embroidery, ourselves in our Oakland, CA warehouse.

Our textile products are manufactured in two factories, one each in China and India. We have worked with these factories for a combined 10 years and we consider them more as friends than just business partners.

Both factories are outstanding manufacturing partners for us. They make every product exactly to the standards that we require. However we don't simply take their word for it, we inspect every shipment ourselves before it leaves our factory.

In addition, we also independently inspect the factory once a year with a reputable and internationally-recognized 3rd party inspection company to ensure they adhere to our Supplier Code of Ethics for social, environmental, labor, and ethical standards.

And finally, our products are also submitted for 3rd party, independent laboratory analysis on a regular basis to confirm that the finished products exactly meet our specifications. Not a single molly mutt product is made anywhere other than at our factories, under our specifications, with our inspection.

Want it made in the USA? Complete our custom work form and we'll get back to you with a quote for the work!

How accurate are your product images?

We do our very best to represent the color of our prints as accurately as possible on our website.

However, please be aware that factors such as varying screen calibrations and the lighting in which you view your items can affect the way a pattern looks. It is also possible that prints from different dye lots may vary slightly in tone and hue.

What material do you use for your covers?

The cotton used in all of our products is thick, yet soft to the touch, 100% cotton canvas. We even go so far as to specify the density of the weave so it is durable and will stand up to years of normal dog use.

This material is featured in our dog bed covers, crate pad covers, dog crate covers, dog car seat covers, dog blankets and pillow packs.

Why do you use wool for your insert stuffing?

For those customers that don’t have enough old pillows, blankets, etc. around their home to stuff a new dog bed, we offer sustainably sourced wool-filled dog bed inserts.

We worked for over two years to find the best possible farm to partner with and we're happy to say they are based in our home state of California!

All of our wool-filled inserts are handmade in our Oakland warehouse and each one is stuffed and weighed to meet our high standards for your dog's comfort.

Our wool...

  • is 100% all natural
  • stays cool in the summer & warm in the winter
  • will last for a lifetime
  • is anti-microbial & chemical free
  • is responsibly sourced in california

When you combine our 100% cotton canvas dog bed covers with our wool-filled inserts you get the perfect year-round dog bed!

What is upcycling?

what is upcycling?

Upcycling is a concept separate from recycling. Recycling is a process that returns materials to a previous state. Whereas, upcycling is reusing discarded objects or materials in such a way to creation a product of a higher quality or value that the original.

Not crafty? Upycling doesn't have to be pinterest-worthy!

  • your grandma was upcycling when she turn old feed sacks into a new dress during the depression
  • your dad upcycled when he made planters out of old coffee cans in the 70's
  • you upcycle every time you clean and remove the label from a mason jar to use for food storage

Projects can be practical or highly artistic. But no matter how you do it, upcycling is an incredibly valuable practice for us all to incorporate into our lives.

why should i use sustainable dog products?
